+ Nothing — Week 5: Put Off. Put On.
Sunday Aug 17th
Text: Colossians 3:1–17 (ESV)
Big Idea: Because you are raised with Christ, you must live like it — taking off the old life and putting on the new.
Key Verse: “Put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator.” — Colossians 3:10 ESV
1. Set Your Mind Where You Belong
Colossians 3:1–4 (ESV)
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Supporting Scriptures (ESV):
Matthew 6:33 — But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Philippians 3:20 — But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. Put to Death the Old Self
Colossians 3:5–9 (ESV)
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
On account of these the wrath of God is coming.
In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices.
Supporting Scriptures (ESV):
Romans 8:13 — For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Ephesians 4:22 — To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires.
3. Put On the New Self
Colossians 3:10–14 (ESV)
And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
Supporting Scriptures (ESV):
Romans 13:14 — But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Galatians 5:22–23 — But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
4. Let the Peace, Word, and Name of Christ Rule You
Colossians 3:15–17 (ESV)
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Supporting Scriptures (ESV):
Philippians 4:7 — And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Psalm 119:11 — I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Bottom Line:
Put off the old. Put on the new. Live in Christ
